Victim listed in stable condition

Police say a 62-year-old Cody resident shot another man in the upper body before killing himself Friday night in Cody.

Cody police say John Tully shot through the window of his ex-girlfriend’s home around 11 p.m., hitting 53-year-old Larry Jansma.

Tully then broke into the East Sheridan Avenue home, confronted his ex-girlfriend, Kathy Stahl, and shot himself, said a release from Cody police.

Stahl, 52, and Jansma reportedly had a run-in with Tully at Cody’s Rocky Mountain Discount Liquor earlier that evening.

After the encounter, Jansma followed Stahl home to make sure she was safe.

When they arrived at Stahl’s residence, Stahl and Jansma found Tully waiting in the garage.

After exchanging words, Tully left, remarking to Jansma, “If I am going down, you’re coming with me,” the release said.

About 15 minutes later, Stahl called police to report Tully was attempting to break into her house. As Stahl spoke with a dispatcher, the release said, Tully fired a round from a .44 magnum through a window of the home, striking Jansma in the upper torso.

Stahl screamed and fled to the bathroom, attempting to barricade herself inside, the release said.

Tully forced his way in.

After confronting Stahl, Tully shot himself with the revolver and fell to the ground.

At 11:03 p.m. — about one minute after the call was placed to police — the first officer arrived on scene and heard a woman scream for help.

The officer found Tully apparently dead in a hallway adjacent to the bathroom, with a revolver next to his body.

Jansma was found on the floor of the dining room with a single gunshot wound to his chest. The officer attempted to assist Jansma, who was still conscious, and two ambulances were dispatched.

On Monday afternoon, Jansma was listed in stable condition at West Park Hospital, said hospital spokesman Joel Hunt. Cody Police Chief Perry Rockvam declined to specify where Jansma was shot, citing his privacy, but described it as a serious gunshot wound.

At Tully’s residence, Cody police later recovered a suicidal note next to an empty gun holster.

Tully had been dating Stahl until November, police said. On Monday, police were wrapping up the last few details of their investigation of Friday’s shooting, Rockvam said.

Cody police had not had a lot of previous contact with Tully, but Rockvam said officers investigated Tully in 2004 after he allegedly threatened to shoot another individual. No charges were filed as a result of that incident, he said.
