Panthers qualify six in first two meetsThe Powell High School Panther track program may only have two meets under its belt this season, but head coach Scott Smith already has plenty to smile about. The Panthers already boast six advance qualifiers to May's state championships and more could be on the way. “Getting two more advance qualifiers was awesome,” Smith said of his team's performance at the Worland D&D Twilight last Thursday. “It is great to have this many (qualifiers) this early in the season.”Remember, it was just two weeks ago that Smith was forecasting a slow start to the season due to the Panthers' deep state tournament runs to conclude basketball season. The team's latest state qualifiers came in the form of Patrick Sullivan in the 400 and Rustin Myrick in the 300-meter hurdles. For Myrick, it was his second automatic qualifying event of the season. The senior punched his ticket in the 110-meter hurdles at the first meet of the year in Cody. Joining that pair as automatic qualifiers are sophomores Drew Magill (long jump) and Kyle Sullivan (high jump) on the boys' side. Sophomore Kassey MacDonald inked her name to the state roster for the Panther girls in Cody as well. “We were glad to get a meet in last week,” notes Smith. “Very few others in the state did. I was very pleased to see the number of marks (from Cody) that were better last week. The conditions weren't bad, but not that much better than the first meet.”Smith notes the improvement comes from his team's hard work in practice. That effort, he notes, is showing dividends. The Panthers have an opportunity to reap even greater rewards today (Thursday) when the team travels to Cody for the Cody Trackstravaganza. The meet starts at 10:30 a.m. and takes the place of the Lovell meet which originally appeared on the Panthers' schedule for this date.
