Earlier this month, the Powell City Council passed an ordinance requiring outside disconnects on all structures receiving city utilities.
City Administrator Zack Thorington said that, without the boxes, the only way to cut power to a building is by cutting the power line.
“We don’t go around and find people in non-compliance,” Thorington explained. “We only enforce it when their power has been disconnected.”
Anytime service is disconnected for any reason, the city will require the disconnect box to be installed before power to the home or business can be restored.
Thorington said national electric and fire codes require the boxes, but some older buildings constructed before the codes were enacted don’t have the equipment.
