• Third place: Syd and Kim Thompson, 275 Stockade Ct.

• Honorable mention: Christopher Jr. and Erin Cooper, 555 Ave. B; Kenneth and Audrey Buchli, 468 S. Evarts St.; Laura Guinn, 927 Sylvan Ct.

The winners for best-decorated business display:

• Honorable mention: City of Powell Parks Department; Dan's Boot and Saddle, 276 S. Douglas St.

All city residences with outdoor displays were included in the judging, which took place between Dec. 10-15.

First-place residential winners David and Mary Jo Decker decorate their home throughout the year for various holidays, and Mary Jo said Christmas is one of her favorites.

“I really enjoy it,” she said.

She faithfully decks out the house in holiday decorations each December and is glad that local residents paint Powell with Christmas lights.

“It brightens up the town when people decorate,” she said.

The Deckers have a variety of decorations on display, all aglow in white and red.

Candy canes line the walkway, lighted trees stand proud in the yard and a mix of snowmen, stars, packages and garland round off the display.

“We've got a little bit of everything,” David said.

The couple's Christmas display collection includes hand-crafted wooden decorations that David made, including a “Merry Christmas” sign and snowmen.

David leaves most of the decorating to Mary Jo, he said.

“That's the wife's pet project,” David said. “I just sit back and watch and sometimes help with the ladder.”

The couple has two young grandchildren in Cody, and Mary Jo said while they aren't old enough to appreciate their grandparent's Christmas lights yet, she hopes they will someday participate in the fun.

Mary Jo said the lights will be on display until after Christmas, once the weather warms up enough to brave working outside.

“Right now it's too cold,” she said.
