After a few hours of confusion, the Powell High School cheerleaders were awarded third place for their stunt performance at the State Spirit Competition last week.
Douglas won the competition and Rawlins finished second.
Vicki Walsh, coach of the cheerleading squad, said the team was initially told following the competition Wednesday, that they had finished fourth, behind Wheatland, but were later informed that the scores were reversed, and Powell had actually finished two points ahead of Wheatland.
The confusion apparently began when one squad that had been scheduled to compete had withdrawn, Walsh said.
“The girls were good with that,” Walsh said. “Third is better than fourth. I kind of expected to be second or third. Douglas was really good this year.”
The girls had a more disappointing finish in the non-stunt routine competition, finishing seventh among the 15 teams competing.
“I thought it was a really good routine,” Walsh said, “and I thought we deserved better.”
Walsh said their low score may have been because the judging panel was all new this year, because the routine had taken into consideration the critique the team received last year, when they finished second in the non-stunt competition.
