The Powell High School cheerleaders almost made it to the top last week with a second-place finish with their non-stunt cheer at the state spirit competition in Casper.

The Powell girls finished less than four points behind winner Mountain View and edged out third-place Worland in the 14-team field in the event.

It was the first time since 2002 that the cheerleaders had finished in the top four, according to their coach, Vicki Walsh.

In their other event, though, the all-girl stunt cheer competition, the Panther girls finished fifth, just a point out of fourth place, which Walsh said was disappointing.

“They did the best performance I had ever seen them do,” Walsh said.

Walsh said the judges told her the team “didn't have enough tumbling or stunts” in the routine, but she added that the two teams who finished just ahead of Powell dropped stunts, while her girls had a clean performance.

Kemmerer won the event with Douglas finishing second.

Walsh said overall the team put on an excellent performance.

“They did so awesome,” Walsh said. “I was proud of them.”

The PHS dance group, the Groove Masters, edged out Douglas for seventh place. Jackson won the event by scoring more than 100 points with Lovell finishing second.

Groove Masters coach Myra Bennett was unavailable for comment Monday.
