Eighth graders runners up at conference meet

An undefeated season was capped off with a team conference title by the Powell Middle School seventh grade boys’ track team in dominant fashion while the eighth grade boys finished runners up in a tight team battle with Cody in Thermopolis on Saturday.

Overall the seventh grade boys finished with five individual champions and three relay wins, while the Cubs finished with 181 points — 90 ahead of hosts Thermopolis in second place.

Individual winners were Keaton Bennett, who won the 100 hurdles (17.33), 200 hurdles (30.2) and the pole vault clearing 8 feet, 6 inches; Karcher Foley won the triple jump (34-4) and Levi Cox won the shot put (28-0).

Despite not getting a victory on the day, Cobey Khan placed second in the 200 meters (27.5) and the 400 meters (1:01.4) while also placing third in the 100 meters (13.08).

The 4x100 relay team of Brayden Benander, Braxton Nelson, Santiago Gutierrez and Dylan DeBoer won with a time of 54.17; the 4x400 relay team of Orin Onstine, Tanner Anderson, Cash Peterson and David Stearns won in 4:56 and the 800 medley relay team of Benander, Tucker Muecke, Khan and Bennett won in 1:59.36.

“All the seventh grade boys did their job to the best of their ability,” coach Zach Coombs said. “As coaches, all we heard all day was ‘are we getting enough points for the team.’ It was fun to see them work hard and pull together to have an undefeated season. They won every meet by at least 80 points.”

The eighth graders were locked in a tight battle with Cody throughout, finishing far and away as the top two teams — as Cody just edged out the Cubs with 163.5 points to Powell’s 154.5.

“The eighth grade boys showed a ton of character,” Coombs said. “We were neck and neck with Cody all day. The boys battled and have nothing to be disappointed in. We are very proud of the eighth grade boys, and they have a bright future at Powell High School.”

Powell had two individual winners, with Garrett Lennon claiming victory in the pole vault (10-9) and Brady Harvey winning the discus (137-1).

Breckyn Kobbe performed strongly in the sprints for Powell, finishing second in the 100 meters (12.08), 200 meters (25.97) and the 400 meters (57.24) while Dayton Lawrence placed second in the pole vault (9-6).

Third place finishes were Broc Frank in the high jump (5-2), Lincoln Crawford in the pole vault (7-6) and Kaden Wolff in the shot put (37-0).

Powell was set to take part in the Best of the Best meet in Lander on Tuesday, May 9, taking the track to compete against the best around Wyoming regardless of what town they are from.
