The Tigers challenged the Panthers on the mat last week, and the Panthers were the decisive winners.Powell wrestlers won all but one bout on their way to a 57-9 win over Lander in a dual wrestled at Cabre Gym at Northwest College.The Panthers gave up six points at the start of the dual by forfeiting the heavyweight match, but quickly established their dominance with three straight wins. Dylan Rood started the team scoring for Powell with a 3-1 win at 103, defeating Lander's Dalton Weill, who had defeated Rood earlier this season. Luke Wozney followed by dominating his opponent at 112, scoring in every period on his way to a major decision that put the Panthers in the lead for good. Jessee Craig followed with a 7-0 win to put the Panthers up 10-7.At 125, Zach Thiel took Lander's Brode Bullington, and stayed close through two periods. Thiel trailed by only one point after one period and two after the second, but in the third, Bullington scored an escape and takedown to finish with a 10-6 win. Despite the loss, Thiel won praise from coach Nathan Urbach.“Zach wrestled a good match against a defending state champion,” said Urbach.It was all Powell after that. Olie Olson scored a pin in the final minute of his match, Colt Nix ended his in just over a minute, and Randy Andrews finished off his opponent in the second period. Auston Carter followed with a 10-5 decision before Jimmy Seckman and Cole Kary scored second-period pins.Beau Williams scored a take-down in the first period of his match at 171 and made it stand up the rest of the way to take a 2-1 win, and Monte Nickles took the quick route, pinning his man in just 50 seconds. Joe Lujan ended the evening with a 7-5 decision.“Joe wrestled pretty well,” said Urbach. “He wasn't feeling good, but he wrestled through it.”The Panther's only other action last week was by the JV wrestlers, who competed in the Greybull Invitational, and Urbach said they did well against several strong 2A teams.Kurt Bullinger placed third at 215 at the meet and Danny Harris wrestled to fourth place.This week the Panthers will compete in the Riverton Invitational against a field that includes several 4A teams. It will be the last major tournament prior to the regional tournament. Next week they will close the regular season with a Tuesday night dual with Cody at home and a trip to Worland to meet a strong Warrior team.Competion opens Friday at Riverton and continues through Saturday.
