Backpack Blessings feeds 144 kids weekend meals

Food for a hungry tummy is as “Sweet as Pie” to elementary school age children.

That’s the theme of the 2023 Backpack Blessings virtual fundraising appeal by Backpack Blessings of Powell, a non-denominational 501(c)3 program that relies only on donations and grants to cover the cost of enough food to feed about 144 Powell elementary school kids each weekend during the school year.

The virtual appeal replaces the pie sale that was formerly the source of fundraising for the program. Hence, “Sweet as Pie.”

Backpacks are filled during the school year to provide six meals of nutritious food, including two snacks and drinks per weekend.

“Because of generous individuals and local businesses, we have been able in past years to cover the cost of food which is approximately $40,000 per school year,” said Backpack  Blessings board member Marybeth Richardson. “Our board of director buyers are diligent in finding the right food at the lowest cost possible, even in a season of rising food prices. It’s easy to remember that $34 feeds one student for a month.”

“Donating the costs of baking a pie, or what you would pay for a slice of pie, will help us keep the backpacks filled,” she added.

Donations made out to Backpack Blessings of Powell, PO Box 1, Powell, WY, will help the board through this holiday season fundraiser. Donations are needed throughout the school mon-
ths and can be received at any time.

“Any way you slice it, we are thankful for all who have donated to the ‘pie’ in the past and who can share again this year,” she said.

If you wish to purchase food to donate, check out the BP website at backpackblessingsofpowell.com and go to “meal programs.”
