In all, the winner of 2009's average title at the National Finals Rodeo won $7,755 in Monday's Xtreme Bulls event.
After beginning the week ranked 44th in the world for the 2010 season, Asay's Monday performance should shoot him up into the mid-20s of the world rankings once all the results from rodeo's Cowboy Christmas period are tabulated.
Only two-time defending world champion J.W. Harris, who won Monday's average title with a two-ride score of 175 fared better than Asay when it came to prize money. Clayton Williams turned in an overall score that was one point higher than Asay's two-ride combined score of 167, but earned $47 less due to differences in prize money allocation between the first and final rounds.
Asay advanced to Monday's finals after scoring 75 points with his opening-round ride. That performance left him in seventh place entering the finals.
Monday's Xtreme Bulls event had been billed as a battle featuring five former world champions, but only two were able to compete. Former champions Cody Hancock (2000) and B.J. Schumacher (2006) were dealing with lingering injuries and were medical withdraws. Wesley Silcox (2007) had already endured a rough Cowboy Christmas during which he had taken hits to the chin and head on three different rides. Silcox withdrew from Monday's event citing concussion concerns.
Even Harris, the day's champion, was battling injury. Harris won Monday's title just weeks removed from suffering a collapsed lung. He's also dealing with ACL and MCL injuries to a knee.
“I've rode with worse injuries,” Harris said of his condition. “I just have to block out what's bothering me, just go ride and worry about what's wrong with me after the bull riding.”
The Cody Xtreme Bulls event will be televised on ESPN2 at noon on July 25. The event will be rebroadcast at a variety of dates and times on the various ESPN family of stations.
