Powell High School alumni will convene in Powell this weekend for the 93rd all-class reunion, with a special emphasis on Powell's centennial year.Individual classes will gather Friday to renew friendships and reminisce about the “good old golden-rule days” in the Powell schools.
Saturday's activities begin early with the annual “5K Fun Run/Walk-10K Run-1 Mile Run.” Participants will begin registering at 6:30 a.m. with runners and walkers taking off at 7 a.m.
From 8 to 10 a.m. alumni will gather on the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce lawn for a free breakfast. While there they may meet with Bob Bonner and Beryl Churchill, co-authors of “Home in the Valley — Powell's First Century,” who will be glad to autograph copies of their book.
At 10 a.m., the annual Alumni Golf Tournament tees off at the Powell Golf Club. Participants will register at 9 a.m.
Homesteader Museum will host a special centennial event at 10 a.m. when a time capsule buried during Powell's 50th Anniversary is opened. Items from the capsule will be put on display.
Following the opening, Homesteader will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A special exhibit, “Powell — Then and Now Photo Art Contest,” will be on display. Bonner and Churchill will be on hand to sign copies of their book. The museum also will have souvenir centennial items for sale.
At 2 p.m. all children are welcome to attend a free “Special Kids Treat” at the museum.
Saturday closes with the annual Powell High School Alumni Association dinner/dance for alumni and guests at The Commons in downtown Powell. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner to be served at 6:30. During the banquet, the newest “Honorary Alumnus” of Powell High School will be named.
Dancing begins at 9 p.m. Inside The Commons, dancers may enjoy the music of Randy Keller, while others may opt for the outside street dance featuring “Hurricane Mesa.”
