Alum sends $1,000 memorial gift to PHS basketball

Inspired by the memory of former Powell High School basketball standout Jerry Nielsen, Larry J. Hart, a 1964 graduate of PHS, has donated $1,000 for the benefit of the Panther basketball program.

Hart, principal owner of the LJ Hart & Company financial services company of St. Louis, Missouri, made the memorial gift to the Powell Schools Foundation for use “in any way the coaches desire.”

Nielsen and the 1957 Powell Panther basketball team under Coach Keith Bloom finished second in the state tournament, losing in double overtime to the Cody Broncs.  Hart said he remembers listening to the games with great excitement.

After recently reading the obituary of Gerald (Jerry) Orsen Nielsen, Hart said he wanted to recognize “one of our better Powell High School athletes” and his strong ties to Coach Bloom. Nielsen died May 10, 2022, in Lincoln, California,  at the age of 82.
