Powell goes after state title in DouglasThe Powell 14-15 year-old All Stars began play last night (Wednesday) in Douglas in search of a state title. The team, one of nine Wyoming teams still in the hunt, is hoping the weekend results in a state title. Powell was slated to open state tournament play against Jackson. To reach the Douglas tournament, Powell had to navigate its way through a trio of district tournament games in Lander last weekend. Powell knocked off Cody, Lander and Cowley/Lovell in succession. “We had a pretty good weekend,” noted Pudge Fagan, the All-Stars' coach. “We played good team ball for the most part.”Powell opened the tournament with a 14-5 victory over Cody. The game was tight for three innings before Powell came to life with a five-run fourth inning to blow the game wide open. Cody never recovered. “It was close those first three innings,” said Fagan. “From that fourth inning on, we just started thrashing the ball though.”Powell followed with an 8-6 win over host Lander. Olie Olsen threw four innings while Cooper Wise came in to earn the save. “That was our ugly win for the tournament,” Fagan said. “Our one through five hitters really came through for us. There were a lot of walks because they were calling a tight strike zone, but Cooper came in and gave us three innings of shut-out baseball.”After a nervous victory, Powell opted to go for a blowout in its final tournament game. Seth Gilmore picked up his second win of the tournament as he threw a complete five-inning game to help give Powell a 14-0 shutout victory and the district title. “We scored four runs in the first, six in the second and four more in the fourth,” said Fagan. “It was a pretty nice game. This group of kids is a great bunch. They represent Powell well.”
