Wyoming Outdoorsmen is sponsoring a special hunter safety course focused and designed for women of all ages who are new to hunting. A new feature of the class offers students a chance for indoor live-fire training.
For the past three years the group has been offering the class and has had to turn away applicants due to a limited class size of 16. But now, with the meeting happening at the community room in the new Cody Region Game and Fish office, they can double the size of the class, said Bruce Salzmann, board member for the nonprofit organization.
“The new location opens the class to more future hunters,” he said. “Women are the fastest growing segment of new hunters.”
The five-day class schedule has a new feature that will make those who have already passed the class want to take it again. On Day 4 the class will be held at the Cody Firearms Experience for both inert and live-fire education.
“Hands-on experience is essential,” Salzmann said.
Board members Tim Barry and Salzmann will lead the classes. The all-women class will include the standard hunter safety curriculum and the instructors will incorporate topics geared toward the interests of female beginning hunters.
“We’re adding some features that should pique the interest of the beginning hunters,” he said.
The class is open to everyone and daughters who wish to bring their parents are encouraged to do so.
It will be held at the new Cody Regional Game and Fish offices just north of Cody beginning on Monday, Feb. 27, from 5:15-8:45 p.m. and continuing at the same time on the evenings of Feb. 28, March 1-3.
Attendance at all class sessions is required along with successfully passing the class exam in order to receive the official hunter safety certificate. The organization will also be offering an open class in late March for those interested.
