Over 60 years, local program has brightened countless ChristmasesAs Christmas arrives this week, there are certain holiday staples residents can count on — celebrations at local churches, a festively decorated downtown, excited children reveling in a break from school, and the Christmas Basket program. The charitable program has existed in Powell since 1949. Sixty years ago this Christmas, a 19-year-old Sally Montoya began her tradition of giving with the Christmas Basket program. With that first basket given to a family in need, she began a lifelong commitment to generosity and selflessness. Her efforts sparked the Powell Council for Community Services, and a small army of volunteers has joined Sally each holiday season over the decades.Since 1949, hundreds of residents have given their time, money and donations. Volunteers have ensured that those in need will be cared for, especially during the holiday season. During Christmases such as this, when money is tight and the economy is faltering, many families appreciate the program's provisions.Last week, amid preparations for this year's drive, a group of volunteers paused to honor Sally and her unwavering dedication to families in need. They also recognized Bob Kolb of Food Basket IGA, who has supported the program since 1949.For more than half of Powell's 100 years, Sally has given more than food, toys, furniture and clothing. She has established a community legacy of generosity that will continue to benefit Powell families for decades to come.
