Yes, it’s February again and Cupid’s arrows and hearts are flying off store shelves! Valentine’s Day is a special day when love springs eternal and men wait until noon, Feb. 14, to rush to a favorite shop to get their special gal a “somewhat fresh” bouquet of flowers, a box of leftover Christmas chocolates rewrapped and one corny greeting card from the thousands on display in the Hallmark aisle. These event planners are frantically checking to see what restaurants can squeeze in a table for two. 

Way to go guys! But, guess what … even though the day has passed, there is still time to visit the Park County Animal Shelter and choose a new shelter pet! They need love too. “The greatest happiness of life is the conviction we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.” –Victor Hugo. There is no gift from the grocery store or flower shop capable of delivering the unconditional love more than from a pet! 

Now, I’m not suggesting you run out and adopt a shelter pet to make up for not doing it on Valentine’s Day. Oh wait…maybe I am! There are so many great reasons to adopt a shelter pet this time of year. And ladies, this article is meant for you too. Don’t be a procrastinator, understand the power of this amazing family gift!

Pets don’t expect you to take them out for fancy dinners. A small treat will do just fine. And you don’t have to buy them roses or diamonds or fancy sporting gear. How about a new squeak toy instead? Also, you don’t have to buy them stale chocolates (besides, it’s not good for them), and you don’t have to get all gussied up to hang out with your pet. Dogs and cats accept you just as you are (pajama wear is cuddly and beautiful to pets). With the winter chill about to set in soon, it’s the perfect time of year to snuggle with a furry friend.

 Finally, you can count on your new pet for unconditional love. A shelter pet will become a part of your life, but to them, you are their life. Happy tail wags or a little rub up your leg powered by a purr is definitely going to brighten any day.  

Give shelter pets a chance this month of Cupids and hearts! Shelter pets will be so grateful you chose them over some chocolates, flowers and a corny card! Believe me … they will know!

So remember friends, money can buy a lot of things on this Valentine’s Day, but it doesn’t wag its butt every time you come through the door or curl up around your neck during a late night movie. They will love you from the very depths of their Pugin’ heart. I Shih Tzu not!
