Monday, April 22 will mark the final day the Powell Library is open for business in its current building downtown.
Park County Libraries Director Karen Horner announced last week the upcoming schedule for the library as workers prepare for demolition and then construction of a new library on the same site.
The library will reopen at Homesteader Hall in the Park County Fairgrounds on Monday, May 6. Horner said previously that gap would give library staff time to pack items and then have materials either moved to Homesteader Hall or items, such as old furniture, prepared for sale or disposal.
The new facility is planned as a modern, 14,000 square foot building that will offer both more features for the community and staff, but also better infrastructure to avoid some of the issues that have plagued the current building, such as water leaks. The building is being paid for by a $8.4 million grant from the state, $3.2 million from the county and funds donated and raised by the library foundation. While a complete timetable is up in the air until building plans are further along, Horner said they have to be finished by the end of 2026 to satisfy the state grant requirements, which also require construction work to start in October following demolition.
“We have to get out of that library, demolish it and have everything planned out and ready so we can actually start building by October,” Horner said recently.
The Powell Library's temporary location at the Homesteader Hall will offer normal operating hours, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. The library will also continue offering programs, and Horner said they’re looking into other community organizations hosting some of the events if needed.
Horner said patrons are encouraged to hold onto any library materials they currently have checked out until the reopening on May 6. No fines will be charged during this period, and holding onto items will assist with the moving process.
