The weather finally broke up for the Powell Panther boys’ track and field team, allowing for the Panthers to compete in the D&D Invitational in Worland on Thursday — qualifying four individuals for the state meet.

Powell was led by Cody Seifert, who swept the long jump and triple jump and secured qualifying marks with leaps of 20 feet, 5 1/4 inches and 42-1 1/2 respectively.

“Cody had a great start to his season and I feel he is just beginning to show what he is capable of doing,” coach Scott Smith said.

Another victory for the Panthers came from Daniel Merritt, who won the 800 meters (2:00.93) while also taking fourth in the 1600 (4:42.51) with another qualifying time.

Isaiah Woyak placed second and earned a qualifying mark in the high jump (6-0) while Stuart Shoopman took sixth in the 110 meter hurdles in a qualifying time (16.73).

Other top finishes for Powell included Simon Shoopman taking fifth in the 300 meter hurdles (43.34), Jeremy Harms placing fifth in the pole vault (11-0) and Jace Hyde finishing sixth in the 400 meters (54.06).

“It was great just to get a meet in,” Smith said. “To have it be against the high level of competition makes it better. For the kids to get out and compete as well as they did made it a great start to the season.”

Team results from the Worland meet were not available as of press time.

Powell took part in the Meetster Bunny Invitational in Cody on Monday, and is set to host the LA Kohnke on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Results from the Meetster Bunny Invitational will be in the April 13 edition of the Powell Tribune alongside a preview for the LA Kohnke.
