The Powell Panther boys’ track and field team had the opportunity to compete at the Wyoming Track and Field Classic in Casper on Friday as well as the Rocky Mountain Invite in Cowley, where the Panthers ran away with the team title with a 70.5 point victory over second place Lovell.

WYOMING TRACK CLASSIC

Competing in Casper the Panthers were able to see some of the top athletes regardless of classification, as several athletes were invited to the competition.

Isaiah Woyak had two of the highest placements for the Panthers, finishing third in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 2 inches, while also placing fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-11 3/4.

Adam Williams had the next highest placement for the Panthers, clearing 13-0 in the pole vault to take home fifth.

Stuart Shoopman placed eighth in the 110 meter hurdles with a 16.32, while Liam Taylor was eighth in the 1600 meters with a 4:40.43.

Korbyn Warren was the final competitor for the Panthers, taking 12th in the 3200 meters (11:01.53).

“The track classic is a real honor to get invited to — top athletes from around the state from all four classes. It was a great experience for them to prepare for state in Casper in just a few weeks,” coach Scott Smith said.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN INVITE

In Cowley on Saturday the Panthers battled against six other teams, running away with the team title by finishing with 204.5 points.

Powell had several event winners, including Shoopman in the 110 meter hurdles (16.29); Landon Hyde in the high jump (5-10); Williams in the pole vault (13-0); Caden Nelson in the long jump (20-5) and Gabe Weimer in the shot put (46-2).

The Panthers had a top three finish in nearly every event on Saturday, helping Powell earn the top spot ahead of second place Lovell which had 134 points.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON WEEKEND

Powell heads back out for the final weekend of the regular season, starting with the Cody Trackstravaganza at noon Thursday.

That will be followed by a meet in Thermopolis on Friday afternoon, with the Panthers finalizing their regional roster spots with one last chance to automatically qualify for the state meet in the regular season this weekend.

“Cody will be the final run/jump/throw off in some of our events so we can finish up our regional team,” Smith said. “Going back-to-back on Thursday and Friday will give our regional kids the experience to compete back-to-back days like they will for regionals and state. Getting more automatic qualifiers is always a bonus and of course, continued improvement from everyone is always a goal.”

Powell will head to the 3A West Regional meet next Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, in Mountain View.
