Seventh graders finish strong

Posted

Warmer weather Saturday allowed for Powell Middle School to host its annual Powell Athletic Roundtable Invite — with the eighth grade girls seeing mixed results while the seventh grade girls had strong finishes in a majority of events.

EIGHTH GRADE

Overall, the eighth grade girls had a strong number of individual finishes, including seven in the top five.

The Cubs did have one victory on the day, with the 800 medley relay team of Montana Mixon, Leah Graham, Ashlee Jacobsen and Karee Cooley (2:11.7) finishing with the top time on Saturday.

The highest individual finish for the Cubs was Graham in the shot put, taking second place with a throw of 26 feet, 11 1/2 inches. That throw earned her a qualifying mark for the Best of the Best meet at the end of the season in Lander — it was the only qualifying mark for the meet at the eighth grade level.

Jacobsen had a third place finish in the 400 meters (1:11.91); Eleasah Horsley took third in the 800 meters (2:58.08) and fourth in the 400 meters (1:13.49); Graham placed fourth in the 200 meter hurdles (36.49), and Elainna Cary placed fifth in both the 400 meters (1:17.63) and the 800 meters (3:08.61).

The remaining two relays for the Cubs placed third in their respective events.

“It was great since the weather had limited practices and they were dealing with strong winds all weekend,” coach Zach Coombs said. “The girls and boys worked hard and I am looking forward to seeing even more qualify.”

SEVENTH GRADE

The seventh grade girls had an overall strong weekend, finishing with three first place victories and 15 top five individual finishes.

Leading the way for the Cubs was Kindyle Floy, who won the 200 meters (30), 400 meters (1:06.09) and placed second in the high jump (4-4) — she earned a qualifying mark in all three events.

Abigail Visocky was the other Cub to win an event, running away with the 200 meter hurdles (34.58) and earning a qualifying time in the process.

Other Cubs earning qualifying marks for the Best of the Best meet were Stella Shoopman who placed fourth in the 200 meter hurdles (35.42) and Autumn Kidd who placed fourth in the high jump (4-2).

“The seventh grade girls just work hard,” Coombs said. “They don’t back away from any workout and push themselves to their limit. I am really looking forward to their growth and improvement.”

Other top three finishes for the Cubs include Peyton Ott taking third in the 400 meters (1:13.1) and long jump (12-0) and Macie Velasco in the 1600 meters (6:38.22).

NEXT MEET

Powell was scheduled to take part in a meet on Tuesday, April 4, in Worland, but that was canceled due to the track not being cleared of snow in time.

The next meet for the Cubs is scheduled for next weekend in Cody on Saturday, April 15, with another dual with Cody scheduled for the following Tuesday.

Coombs said he is looking forward to better weather next week and to seeing the kids improve alongside it.
