Baby boy brings in the new year

Just one hour and 18 minutes into the new year Powell welcomed its first baby of 2023 when Osbern Marric Gifford was born to Nathan and Shianne Gifford of Cody.

Osbern, who shares a name with his father’s 11th century relative, was three days early and weighed 7 pounds and 3 ounces.

“My family tree way back in the 11th century there was a guy named Osbern and we actually named our first kid Helias which is on that same family tree,” Nathan said.

Helias, who is just 18 months old, will now have a younger brother who he may one day wrestle alongside if they follow in Nathan’s footsteps. Osbern’s gender was a surprise and while Nathan said that he had some hope for a little girl to join his firstborn son he is excited to have a second boy. Mother and father joked that a family of all boys means that the Gifford family could one day populate an entire wrestling team.

While some may find two boys under 2 daunting, Shianne is excited for her all boy family.

“I am ready,” she said. “I would love to have all boys. I was really excited about finding out he was a boy.”

Nathan joked they actually stayed up through New Year’s Eve this year.

“It wasn’t the plan but [Osbern] had other plans,” Shianne said.
