Powell AAUW members will learn about drone-based mapping of the Bronze Age city of Mohenjo Daro in Pakistan on Thursday, March 7 at 4:30 p.m. at the Powell Library meeting room. Northwest College anthropology professor Greg Smith will give the presentation open to the public.
Smith was born in Seattle and earned a bachelors in geography and anthropology from Central Washington University before moving on to the University of Pittsburgh for a doctorate in anthropology.
Most of his archaelogical research has been in the Maya area of Mesoamerica, but he has also conducted fieldwork in Mongolia, Ecuador and across the United States. Most recently, his research interests have drawn him to Pakistan where he is now working at the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro of the Indus Valley civilization.
While he enjoys his research, he is first a teacher of community college students. His greatest professional passion is taking students out of the classroom and off to archaeologically themed destinations such as Peru, England, Mexico, Greece, the American Southwest, Guatemala and Egypt.
This May he will be taking some NWC students to Cambodia and Thailand to learn about cultural sites like the famous ruins of Angkor Wat.
AAUW members will have a short business meeting at 4 p.m.
