Controversial finish caps popular derby

The grandstands filled with various sounds of displeasure on Saturday when the Park County Fair’s Demolition Derby ended with a driver being called out by officials.

Ten four-man teams from the surrounding area came to the Park County Fair to compete in Thursday’s inaugural ranch rodeo. In addition to battling in four different events, awards for top hand and top horse were also handed out.

Local Minors and Majors standouts gain experience in Green River, each going 1-2

Powell’s Little League Minors and Majors All-Star baseball teams competed in the Wyoming District No. 1 Tournament in Green River last weekend, each winning one game and losing two to end their seasons.

On Tuesday, the Powell Golf Club hosted the Rocky Mountain Section Professional Golf Association Pro-Am tournament — with teams from across the region coming to compete.

Powell juniors finish as runners-up

The Powell Little League Juniors baseball team battled to second place at the state tournament last week, coming up just short of Green River after two wild comebacks against Big Horn County.

Powell's Wise excels in crossfit

Places 13th in South Regional crossfit competition

Powell High School alum Cooper Wise went into the South Regional competition in San Antonio, Texas, for the Crossfit Games ranked 47th out of 50 competitors hailing from across the country and Latin America. He wound up finishing 13th.

Powell Swim Club posts good times

Summer State swim competition slated this weekend in Gillette

Six swimmers from the Powell Swim Club competed in Buffalo at the Kate Holt Memorial Swim Meet July 8-9. It was the last meet before the Summer State competition, which starts on Friday in Gillette. As a team, Powell finished eighth out of 16 teams with 176 points.

Former pros passion shifts from playing to coaching

Since the age of 4, Powell Pioneer assistant coach Joe Cates knew baseball was his passion. Before his life journey landed him in Powell, Cates’ pursuit of that passion took him from playing high school baseball and college to being drafted by a major league team, playing on a professional team in Canada and serving as a college pitching coach.

The Powell Pioneers baseball season concluded last week with losses in doubleheaders against Green River and Cody.

Smartt hired as head coach for lady panther swim team

Bob Smartt has been coaching high school swimming for more than two decades, but he’ll soon be adding a new challenge: serving as the head coach of the Powell High School girls swim team while continuing to hold his head coaching position at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado.
