Panther girls tie for first in cross country

Boys second at LanderDespite each of their teams running minus one top runner, the Powell High School cross country teams fared well in Lander last Thursday. The Panther girls tied for first place in a hotly-contested three-way battle. Powell's boys were second behind the host school.

“I was pleased with how the kids ran,” said Powell cross country coach Cliff Boos. “It was quite a trip and we had a couple kids that didn't run due to injuries, but the kids got after it and did a nice job competing.”

Powell's girls had an outstanding day on the course, sharing first-place honors with Lander after both teams amassed scores of 41 points. Lovell finished third with a score of 42.

Despite competing without the services of sophomore Brooke Nisley, the Panther girls still returned home with three of the meet's top six runners. Sophomore Tally Wells continued to pace Powell to the finish line, coming in third in a time of 21:58, 22 seconds off the winning pace. Junior Desiree Murray was 10 seconds further back in fourth place. Freshman Sierra Morrow was sixth in a time of 22:58.

Kassey MacDonald (12th, 24:27) and Carly Klein (16th, 26:04) rounded out the scoring for the Panther girls.

On the boys' side, Powell placed second with a team score of 50 points. Lander won the meet with a score of 36. Both teams easily outdistanced third-place finisher Lyman, which logged an 82-point team total.

The result was more impressive for Powell given the fact the team lined up in the starting chute without senior leader Cody Fagley.

“Had he been there, I think we'd have been right there close to Lander,” said Boos.

Despite Fagley's absence, Powell produced three of the top nine runners. John Kissner raced to a time of 19:02 to place fifth overall. Andrew Feller added an eighth-place time of 19:07. Bodie Friday crossed another three seconds back in ninth place.

Narrowly missing the top 10 was senior Danny McKearney, who clocked a time of 19:14 as Powell was able to cluster its top four runners within a 12-second window. McKearney placed 11th overall.

Rounding out Powell's varsity lineup were Justin Lynn (17th, 20:07), Cole Good (18th, 21:04) and Tyler McCauley (19th, 21:07).

“It was nice to have some time off and train for this meet,” said Boos, whose team had not run competitively in more than a week. “We were able to train on the hills a couple times, and I think that helped us on the Lander course. The hill didn't seem to be an issue for us and we were able to use good strategy on the downhilll section to make up some ground.”

The Panthers were back in action Monday afternoon, participating in the Rocky Mountain invitational at the Lovell golf course.
