Women struggle to score, place sixth
The Northwest College men’s rodeo team continued its strong season in Miles City over the weekend.
The men finished second overall and were just 15 points behind first-place Montana State University.
Colton Redmond led the charge for the Trapper men. The freshman from Wiggins, Miss., was third in the men’s all-around, first in tie-down roping and combined with Lane Krutzfeldt to finish third in team roping. This was all despite having suffered a concussion a week prior in Havre, Mont.
“He’s recouped from that and it looks like he’s going full throttle,” Nose said. “He’s had a hell of a season.”
The freshman duo of Shawn Bird and Zachary Schweigert took first place in team roping for the third-straight weekend.
“They won it hands down,” Nose said. “They’re really out there in front of the region. That’s a big asset to our team.”
Team ropers Brady Gulde and Richard Warren finished seventh and the team of Mason Lee Chaffee and Kellee Jo Hersrud were eighth.
Jacob Mitchell and Tyler Kijac finished second and third in bull riding, netting a total of 114 points for the Trappers. Freshman Dalyn Wingard was third in steer wrestling.
Cody Sheridan finished fifth in tie-down roping.
The women’s team finished in sixth place, scoring only 20 points and now sit in seventh place in the Big Sky Region.
“The girls are very talented,” Nose said, but have fallen victim to close calls and bad luck.
“They’re not quite breaking through the bubble in the point standings,” Nose said. “We’re right there.”
The men are currently second overall in the Big Sky and have a chance to advance to the regional finals if they can keep up this pace.
“We’ve got eight people in the top three,” Nose said. “That says a lot for our team. We haven’t been off to a good start like this since 2005.”
The Trappers will head to Dillon, Mont., this weekend for a three-day rodeo hosted by University of Montana.
