Vincent ‘Jim’ Spiering

Heart Mountain homesteader Vincent ‘Jim’ Spiering died at his Powell home Feb. 8, 2011. He was 91 years old.

Mr. Spiering was born Aug. 26, 1919 in Hillsboro, Ore., the son of Charles Spiering and Lamberta Vanderzanden Spiering. He graduated from high school and military flight school and served in the Navy.

He married Lois Kathleen Hunker in Hillsboro on Nov. 24, 1947.

The couple homesteaded a farm on the Heart Mountain Project in 1950. He served on the Northwest College board of trustees and enjoyed flying, traveling and fishing.

Mr. Spiering is survived by his wife, Lois; five sons, Jerry (Lorraine) of West Linn, Ore.; Ken (Jeanie) of Spokane, Wash.; Gene (Susi) of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Kelly (Sylvia) of Powell; and Tom (Janet) of Powell; a sister-in-law, Barbara Iten of Seattle; 30 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and a grandson, Michael.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14 at St. Barbara’s. The Rev. Glen Szczechowski will officiate.

Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Thompson Funeral Home assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Heart Mountain Free Medical Clinic or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
