Woman's death under investigation

Coroner awaiting results of toxicology testPowell police are investigating the death of a woman who died at a local residence early this week.Powell dispatch received a 911 call at 8:30 a.m. Monday reporting an unresponsive female and a male with a possible broken leg at the house in the 300 block of N. Bent St.

The woman, Kristina Gevara, 26, was declared dead at the scene. The male subject, who police declined to identify, was transported to Powell Valley Hospital, according to a press release from Sgt. Roy Eckerdt of the Powell Police Department, and was still hospitalized Wednesday.

Asked about the possibility of foul play, Eckerdt said there was no obvious evidence.

According to Park County Coroner Tim Power, an autopsy was performed Tuesday, but Power said he would release no information relating to the cause of death until toxicology tests are complete. He estimated that would take two to three weeks.

Power also said he hadn't established a time of death as of Wednesday.

Powell Police Chief Tim Feathers said the incident still is being investigated, but his department is waiting for the autopsy report before proceeding.

“We're waiting on the autopsy report to see what direction that takes our investigation,” Feathers said.

Gevara, who turned 26 on Saturday, Aug. 7, has been a paraplegic since being seriously injured in an automobile accident near Cody in November 2003, in which another occupant of the vehicle was killed.

Police presence at Gevara's residence Monday sparked rumors that the death was related to Monday's arrest in Meeteetse of an escaped convict from Arizona, but Feathers dispelled those rumors Tuesday.
