Winter wonderland: Storm drops snow over Powell and Cody

Posted

Powell and Cody received 3-5 inches of snow by mid-afternoon Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 2 p.m., that was the most snow that had fallen in the Big Horn Basin on Monday, said Trevor LaVoie, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service.

“From the reports so far, Cody and Powell seem to be the most impacted,” LaVoie said. “There is some stuff starting to make its way over toward Greybull, but it’s pretty light so far.”

Monday’s storm was only the second significant snowfall to occur in Powell so far this fall/winter.

While the snowstorm was forecast to continue through Monday and into today (Tuesday), most of the snowfall had occurred by mid-afternoon, LaVoie said.

After it left here, most of the storm’s moisture went north into Montana. The front was stalled across southeastern Montana, down into Johnson County and Natrona County, cutting through the middle of Sweetwater County and into eastern Utah, he said.

However, there was a possibility for more snow activity in the Basin later on Monday, he said.

“We’re waiting to see if some of the upper-level dynamics start to fill in; then we can get some better organization over us,” he said. “It looks like that’s what’s trying to happen; the cloud tops are starting to cool, and that is indicative of instability over the area. It looks promising; then again, it’s not really making it to the surface yet.”

Monday’s snowfall brought Powell’s precipitation total up to 6.2 inches so far for 2015, compared to an average of 6.6 inches, according to powellweather.net.

Total precipitation in Powell was 7.79 inches in 2014, 7.59 inches in 2013 and only 2.54 inches in 2012.
