A hunter stumbled upon a woman’s body about halfway between Cody and Meeteetse on Saturday afternoon — and authorities say she appears to have been the victim of a homicide.
A suspect was arrested in connection with the case on Saturday night, the Park County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday. However, the agency’s brief news release did not identify the man who is in custody or name the deceased.
Law enforcement officials indicated that they believe the woman was killed in southeast Wyoming and then brought to Park County, but they otherwise released few details about their investigation on Monday.
“We’re just trying to do as thorough an investigation as we can while at the same time trying to assist another county in this case,” Park County Prosecuting Attorney Bryan Skoric said of the limited information that’s been publicly released so far.
The sheriff’s office said the victim was a resident of “southeast Wyoming,” but it, like Skoric, did not name the specific place where the woman was from.
Skoric indicated Monday morning that there was still work to do with ensuring family members had been notified and conducting an autopsy.
“Obviously, it’s an investigation that’s ongoing,” he said.
Laramie County District Attorney Leigh Anne Manlove declined to comment when asked about the case Monday. Meanwhile, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, which is leading the case, did not respond to a request for more information.
A local hunter called the Park County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday to report finding the body. The sheriff’s office said the body was found on private property located west of Wyo. Highway 120. Online sheriff’s logs indicated the location was near milepost 67 — an area that lies around 15 miles south of Cody and about the same distance north of Meeteetse.
The sheriff’s office said its deputies and personnel from the Bureau of Land Management and the Wyoming Highway Patrol apprehended a suspect in connection with the apparent homicide on Saturday evening.
An online jail roster accessed over the weekend indicated that a 45-year-old former Cody resident was arrested in the general area of where the body was found and booked into the Park County Detention Center around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The roster said the man was being held on suspicion of multiple charges: one count related to possessing a firearm while a felon (which is itself a felony) and misdemeanor counts of fleeing or eluding police and interference with a peace officer.
That information was later removed from the Park County Detention Center’s online jail roster, although the man remained in custody. He had not been charged with any wrongdoing in Park County or Laramie County circuit courts as of Monday afternoon.
