A woman was accidentally shot inside a Powell home last week, police say, resulting in a relatively minor injury.
Powell police logs show officers were called to a South Day Street residence at 3:50 p.m. on May 15 for a report of “an accidental discharge of a firearm.”
Guadalupe Hernandez, 21, was then cited for a misdemeanor count of reckless endangering in connection with the incident. The statute applies when a person “knowingly points a firearm at or in the direction of another, whether or not the person believes the firearm is loaded.”
Because it’s a pending criminal case, Powell Police Chief Jim Rhea declined to provide many details, but he said Hernandez “recklessly handled his weapon” while at the Day Street residence.
Hernandez has been ordered to appear in Park County Circuit Court on June 17 to answer to the pending misdemeanor.
As for the woman, she was taken to Powell Valley Hospital, treated for her gunshot wound and then released, Rhea said. In the context of gunshots, he said it was a minor injury.
