The small winter break has come and gone for winter sports in the area as Powell High School athletes will get back into the swing of things this weekend in Montana and Wyoming.
Heading up north to start off 2025 and taking part in a tough tournament in Bozeman will be the Panther wrestling teams, as the boys and girls will compete in the Tom LeProwse tournament today (Friday) starting at 11 a.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
The boys’ tournament features 45 teams, including Cody, Lander, Sheridan and Worland as the other four Wyoming teams in attendance.
The girls’ tournament will have 44 teams, with the same Wyoming teams competing.
Powell’s boys are looking to take some momentum into the new year, taking on Montana competition over the next two weeks in Cody and Montana before returning to Wyoming competition for good on Jan. 23 in Lander.
Both the boys and girls will return to Wyoming on Tuesday, taking part in a quad in Cody on Tuesday as Powell and Cody will take on Huntley Project and Laurel from Montana.
Bozeman will be a quick pit stop for the Panther girls in Montana as they will return to Wyoming for the remainder of the season next weekend in Douglas.
Swimming will head down the road to Worland this weekend, taking part in a triangular today (Friday) at 4 p.m. against the host Warriors and Cody.
Powell swimming will return home next weekend for a pair of events on Friday and Saturday, including the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Indoor track will begin practices on Monday before the first meet of the season on Jan. 18 in Gillette.
The PHS basketball varsity will be off until next Thursday, Jan. 9, when both the boys and girls play their first home games against Rocky Mountain.
Northwest College teams will also return to their respective sports before competition starts back up next week, with the wrestling team heading to the NJCAA Coaches Duals in Oklahoma, and the basketball teams wrapping up non-conference action.
