The American Legion Post 26 in Powell will soon be displaying a new American flag courtesy of a group of local students.
Using spray paint, butcher paper, cardboard and more, the third graders of para educator Sarah Wormald’s Westside Elementary School art club created a large flag during the school’s recent read-a-thon competition and fundraiser.
With the event over, the club wanted to pass it on to a local group that would take good care of it, and after going to a recent event at the legion, Wormald knew just who to give it to.
“Part of our motto here for my club is we want to have joy when we make art, discovery when we make art and connection,” Wormald said, adding, “We wanted to connect with our community, which is all of you. We thank you and appreciate you for coming.”
A group of local legion and VFW members were on hand at Westside on Tuesday afternoon to accept the flag and thank the students who made it. The students, in turn, thanked the veterans with treats and had some of their questions answered — such as did you fly a plane? (one worked on them and some jumped out of aircraft) — and at the end Legion Commander Steven Olsen shook each and every student and teacher’s hand.
“We really appreciate this,” he said.
Before long, the legion plans to have the American flag gracing one of the walls of the club.
