UWyo magazine features first-ever food theme

The University of Wyoming is celebrating alumni chefs, winemakers and brewers in its fall 2020 issue of UWyo. The magazine features a food and drink theme for the first time.

“The restaurant industry has been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, making it the perfect time to highlight these hard-working and impressive individuals,” said UWyo Editor Micaela Myers.

UW alum Sheena Ernst, who grew up in Powell, is featured on the magazine’s cover. Ernst graduated from Powell High School and Northwest College before attending UW. At the university, she majored in psychology with minors in history and honors, graduating in 2007. She had an epiphany during her senior year, realizing psychology wasn’t her calling, but cooking was.

Ernst has owned and operated The Wild Table in Red Lodge, Montana, going on five years.

Other locals also are featured in the fall edition.

Cyrus Bevenger grew up in Cody and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering at UW. After working in the semiconductor industry, he turned his skills to brewing. He joined Timnath Beerwerks in 2018 as head brewer and became part owner in 2019.

The UWyo issue also highlights Diane Whitlock, who owns Claire’s French Bakery, which serves the Powell and Cody area. Whitlock sells products using first grains.

Other familiar faces in the edition include Camby Reynolds, farm manager at the Powell Research and Extension Center, and Mike Moore, manager of Wyoming Seed Certification Service. Northwest Area Extension educators Jeremiah Vardiman in Powell and Caitlin Youngquist in Worland also are featured.

This issue of UWyo also introduces readers to campus chefs, Cowboy Branded Meats, athletic nutrition and the many flavors of campus.

“During a difficult time and an unusual semester, this edition of the magazine provides a positive look at UW alumni, students, faculty and staff members who are doing some amazing things in the area of food production and nutrition,” said Chad Baldwin, UW’s associate vice president for marketing and communications. “Readers will be both entertained and informed.”
