UPDATE: The Montana State University Billings baseball team will not be playing Cowley or anywhere else this weekend; thanks to the lousy weather, the team's four-game series with conference rival Western Oregon University has been canceled.
A fresh flurry of snow in Billings earlier this week left Dehler Park in unplayable condition — and that prompted MSUB’s Yellowjackets to look for a new spot for their “home opener.” MSUB initially decided to travel to Cowley, which built its ballpark a few years ago as part of a new recreation complex, but the weather has turned out to be not much better in northern Wyoming.
The Yellowjackets started their season with 30 straight road games, going 19-11 overall. They’re currently ranked No. 7 within NCBWA Division II West Region.
MSUB’s series with Western Oregon had been scheduled to begin with a nine-inning game Friday evening, continue with a doubleheader of seven-inning games on Saturday and conclude with a nine-inning game Sunday. Although they would have been about 85 miles from Billings, MSUB was going to play as the home team.
Western Oregon and MSUB are currently tied atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with identical 14-6 records against conference opponents; the Yellowjackets and Wolves split a four-game series last month in Oregon.
In announcing the series in Cowley on Thursday morning, MSUB said the schedule remained subject to change due to the weather; the team then announced Thursday night that the series had been scrapped. temperatures are expected to stay around freezing on Friday with things warming up into the 40s and 50s on Saturday and Sunday.
