Trapper women second at regional rodeo

Posted

The Northwest College Trappers finished as the runner-up women's rodeo team at the 2010 Big Sky Regional rodeo in Helena last weekend. The Trapper ladies trailed only Montana State University in the final standings. Cody Proctor placed second in the women's all-around standings at the regional event. Proctor finished in a fifth-place tie in breakaway roping and placed fourth in goat tying to earn her spot in the all-around standings. Teammates Pamela Vanek and Leslie Robertson placed second and third, respectively, in the goat tying final standings. In men's competition, the Trappers placed seventh among nine teams. Tylor Bird turned in Northwest's best finish on the men's side with a third-place showing in bull riding. Jordan Gill added a fifth-place finish in bareback riding. Samuel Shelton was sixth in steer wrestling. The team-roping combination of Ike Shaw and Colton Hodson placed sixth overall. Eric Fleming and Travis Winters finished eighth in team roping.

In the season team standings, the Big Sky regional rodeo changed little. The Trapper men remain in sixth place staring across a 1,500-point chasm at No. 5 Miles Community College. The Northwest College women remain in third place, but so far have been unable to significantly chip away at the gap dividing them from the No. 2 position and an automatic berth in the College National Finals Rodeo.

In the individual season standings, Proctor and Haily Hamlin hold down the top two spots in the breakaway roping standings and are currently on target for spots in the CNFR field. Steffani Hofrichter and Vanek sit at No. 5 and No. 6 in the goat tying standings. Both must make up a gap of roughly 75 points over the final two rodeos of the season in order to earn spots in the CNFR field.

Tie-down roper Casey Good is the only other member of the Trappers' lineup currently in position to receive a CNFR bid. Good precariously sits in third position in the tie-down standings, nursing a slim 21.5-point cushion.

Gill sits in fifth place in the bareback standings but trails the third-place competitor by some 271 points. Cayd Kluesner is sixth in the bull riding standings, but needs to overcome a 106-point gap over the space of two rodeos to participate in the CNFR. Sam Shelton is sixth in steer wrestling, trailing the No. 3 competitor by 69 points in one of the region's most tightly-bunched races.

Northwest College looks to continue its spring-semester push up the standings this Friday through Sunday. The Trapper rodeo teams head to Glendive, Mont., to participate in the Dawson Community College rodeo. The Trappers wrap up their season May 7-8 at the University of Montana in Missoula.

The top two men's and women's teams in the Big Sky Region and the top three individuals in the season standings for each event following the conclusion of the University of Montana rodeo will advance to compete in the College National Finals Rodeo.
