Another weekend full of goals at home helped the Northwest College women’s soccer team cruise past visiting Central Wyoming 9-2 on Saturday and Lamar Community College 4-0 on Monday to set up a final weekend of key matchups to wrap up the regular season.
NORTHWEST 9, CENTRAL WYOMING 2
The Trappers (8-3-1 overall, 6-2 Region IX) got off to a quick start against the Rustlers (3-7-1 overall, 3-5 Region IX).
Tessa Hyland got the first goal for the Trappers six minutes in, followed by Brooke Travers a minute later to make it 2-0.
Sienna Fuller added a goal in the 10th minute before Pressly Taylor got her first goal of the first half in the 12th minute.
Central cut the deficit down to 4-1 after a through ball found its way behind the Trapper defense, but Taylor quickly restored the four goal advantage in the 18th minute.
The Rustlers once again cut into the deficit in the 25th minute, but Taylor completed her hat trick in the first half on a penalty in the 33rd minute to give Northwest a 6-2 lead at halftime.
In the second half Northwest continued getting chances, with Nayeli Aguayo making it 7-2 in the 67th minute.
Fuller got her second in the 84th minute and Travers capped off the game with a goal in the 88th minute to make the final score 9-2.
NORTHWEST 4, LAMAR CC 0
Returning to the field on Monday the Trappers matched up with the Runnin’ Lopes (2-8-1 overall, 2-6 Region IX) in a makeup game from early September.
Northwest applied pressure early, but couldn’t break down the visiting defense until midway through the half.
The first goal came when Taylor’s shot was saved and rebounded back to Elliasen Lewis, who slotted it home to make it 1-0 with 22 minutes left in the half.
Northwest continued to put pressure on the Lamar defense and, with five minutes left in the half, Lewis weaved her way through the defense and slotted it home to make it 2-0.
Early in the second half she got her hat trick, breaking past the defense to make it 3-0.
The Trappers continued to control the game, and got the final goal when Savannah Morton scored on another strong solo run to make it 4-0 with 13 minutes left.
REGULAR SEASON FINISHES
Northwest will stay at home to wrap up the regular season, eyeing a top spot heading into the postseason.
The Trappers start by hosting Western Nebraska (3-9-1 overall, 3-4-1 Region IX) on Friday at noon, a team Northwest defeated 4-2 in a nonconference matchup to start the season.
That will be followed by a matchup against Laramie County Community College (7-4-2 overall, 5-2-1 Region IX) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the winner likely getting the No. 3 seed heading into the postseason.
Northwest currently sits in that No. 3 spot, and will likely be locked into a home playoff matchup due to having tiebreakers over all teams that can catch them in the standings.
Northwest only does not hold tiebreakers with Casper College and Western Wyoming, who have all but locked up the top two spots and a first round bye in the postseason.
