During a difficult opening weekend at the Trapper Rodeo, the Northwest College rodeo team only garnered points at the second rodeo, with early season mistakes leading to a disappointing start to the year.
In the first rodeo on Friday the Trappers were unable to have a cowboy place and only had one cowgirl place, as Madison Felchle tied for seventh in breakaway roping with a time of 3.5 seconds but didn’t earn any points in the team standings.
Overall in the first rodeo the University of Montana Western men ran away with the team title with 837 points, nearly double that of Montana State University in second, which had 431.5 points.
MSU did pull away in the women’s standings, finishing with 370 points.
“Our rodeo went well,” coach Del Nose said of the weekend. “We’re working hard, just had the first college jitters with the freshmen. That’s all I can attribute it to since we’ve been practicing since Aug. 20.”
Nose said the team only has a few sophomores on the team and features more cowgirls than cowboys thus far.
The Trappers got on the board in the second rodeo through the header/heeler duo of Chance Marshall and Jaxson Coleman in team roping, finishing in a time of 12.7 seconds to take fifth place.
That earned the Trappers 138 points in the standings, good for fourth as a team.
The University of Montana Western again pulled away in the standings with 714.5 points, this time just ahead of MSU which finished with 692.
The University of Montana Northern took the women’s title with 302 points as the Trappers failed to score.
Nose said all of the teams are “all in the same boat, we’re all scrambling for contestants.”
Continuing the fall flurry the Trappers head on the road to Glendive, Montana, taking part in the Dawson Community College rodeo on Friday and Saturday.
“We’ve just got to get some points so we aren’t so far behind,” Nose said. “We’re heading to Glendive and hoping to be better over there.”
That will be the second of three weekends for the Trappers this season, with the conclusion of fall season already quickly approaching at the end of September.
