Posted

With the regular season quickly winding down the Powell Panther boys’ track and field team saw improvements at the Wyoming Track and Field Classic in Casper and the Lovell Invite on Friday where the Panthers placed third.

WYOMING TRACK CLASSIC

Only two Panthers made the trip to Casper on Friday, with the highest placement coming from Braxton Nelson who took fifth in the high jump clearing 6 feet.

The other competitor for Powell was Colin Walker who placed 11th in the 3200 meters with a time of 11 minutes, 9.51 seconds.

In the team standings the Panthers mustered four points, as Sheridan ran away from the competition with 105 points more than doubling second place.

LOVELL INVITE

The Panthers experienced more success in Lovell, with Powell earning several first place finishes.

The two individual wins for the Panthers came from Korbyn Warren, who won the 800 meters in 2:07.98 and the 3200 meters with a time of 10:35.43.

Powell also got a pair of relay wins, as the team of Dayton Lawrence, Liam Taylor, Warren and Sawyer Wormald won the 4x400 with a time of 3:48.26 and the 1600 sprint medley team of Breckyn Kobbe, Karcher Foley, Wormald and Taylor won with a time of 3:45.13.

Other top five finishes for the Panthers included Wormald who took second in the 300 meter hurdles (41.73) and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (17.5); Breckyn Kobbe took third in the 100 meter dash (11.67); Nathan Varian placed fourth in the 3200 meters (11:59.26) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:16.17); Michael Legerski took fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (44.3); Troy Cheatham placed fourth in the pole vault (11-0) and Landon Hyde was fifth in the high jump (5-6).

“The boys had some good things happen from some of our young kids positioning themselves to help,” coach Scott Smith said. “We also had a couple kids get nicked up a bit but should be able to get back at it on Thursday.”

The Thursday meet will be the final one of the regular season, as the Panthers head to Cody for the Cody Trackstravaganza starting at noon.

With the season nearing its end, Smith said the Panthers are shifting their focus to get the best results at regionals and state.

“We will start working more on the mental parts of competing, race strategies and really fine tuning kids’ technique,” Smith said.

Powell hosts the 3A West Regional meet next weekend on May 16-17.
