For her 85th birthday, Shirley Thomas wanted to cross off a bucket list item: Zip lining.
Along with several family members, Thomas zoomed above the Shoshone National Forest just outside Yellowstone National Park.
“I thought it was pretty awesome,” Thomas said of the Sleeping Giant Zip Line tour on July 27.
She first got the idea a couple of years ago while in Arizona for the winter. While talking with some other seniors, they asked where Thomas was from, and she said Powell, near Cody.
“They had just come from there and they had gone on the zip line,” Thomas recalled. “And that put the notion in my head, so that was on my bucket list.”
Thomas turned 85 on July 18. For last month’s zip lining trip, she was joined by her 80-year-old sister, Margie Thomas.
“Oh, I really liked it,” Margie said of the experience.
“We were both glad we went,” Shirley Thomas added.
Also joining the birthday zip lining excursion were Shirley’s son Darren Thomas, daughter Teresa Alexander, daughter Sherry Robin and grandson Jarred Oliver.
When asked if they opted for one of Sleeping Giant’s shorter tours, Thomas explained that, “We did the whole thing.”
“I don’t know that I looked around much,” she said. “I just hung on and waited for the next stop.”
Thomas described it as an exhilarating experience that she would “absolutely” recommend to others.
As for other items on her bucket list, Thomas said she has always wanted to get on the Wheel of Fortune, “but that probably won’t happen.”
“I’ve been there before as a spectator,” she said, but would like to get on the stage someday.
“That would be good,” Thomas said.
