The City of Powell has officially declared Thursday to be “Elfriede Milburn Day.”
Earlier this month, the city council unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing Milburn’s three decades of service with the Powell animal shelter. The document notes the “countless” hours she’s dedicated to the Caring for Powell Animals organization and the Moyer Animal Shelter. It credits her “unwavering compassion, tireless advocacy, and steadfast leadership” with helping hundreds of animals find forever homes, and says she’s left “a lasting legacy that will continue to benefit both animals and the citizens of Powell for generations to come.”
Milburn will be honored at an ice cream social from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Washington Park.
“Elfriede did a great job of running the Powell animal shelter … for 28 years, and I think she deserves a little recognition,” Mayor John Wetzel said shortly before the council approved the Aug. 3 proclamation.
Wetzel’s comments were echoed by Councilman Zane Logan.
“She dedicated a lot of … her own emotions and time to those animals,” Logan said of Milburn. “So she did a great thing, [a] community service.”
The city says Thursday’s event is an opportunity for the community to say thanks to Milburn for her hard work and dedication.
