Powell resident Bruce Olson took this photograph of the World Trade Center and Ellis Island in June 1995, while he was in New York City with the final leg team for the World Summer Games for Special Olympics.
After terrorists destroyed the towers, Olson came across his photo and wrote an accompanying poem. The Tribune first published his piece on Sept. 11, 2014, and is republishing it today in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
On a bright sunny morning the gates were opened wide to Heaven
In the year of 2001 on 9/11
God welcomed home the heroes from that day
To save the fallen innocents they bravely led the way
In the name of Allah evil men flew
Planes full of innocents into the towers two
They thought their act would make our nation cower
When they crashed the jets into the Twin Towers
Our flag was waving in the breeze unfurled
A symbol of our strength for all the world
Their wish for us was that we would submit
But we came together the day that we were hit
They were wrong about us when they rained down their death
We came back with a vengeance once we caught our breath
As the innocents poured out the heroes poured in
No thought to their lives they would defeat this awful sin
They knew when they entered they’d forfeit their lives
Leaving behind grieving children and their wives
Without remorse they entered that awful hell
So we owe it to them to tell their story well
Their sacrifice they made without regret
So now it’s up to us to never forget
Now we are fighting an unpopular war
Some people ask what are they fighting for
We send off our fathers our sons and our brothers
To make this land safe for all the others
Across the globe they’ve taken the fight
So here at home we won’t have to feel the bite
Imagine our streets without these brave women and men
Without them fighting for us where would we be then
They keep the wolf from coming through our door
That is what these brave men are fighting for
Say a prayer to God for their safety each night
And thank God that they’re still willing to fight
These brave warriors who for us through battle trod
Will have an honored place at the foot of God
