Rainy weather delayed the start of tennis action on Saturday but the Powell Panther tennis teams squeezed in conference matches against Kelly Walsh but not Natrona County to end the regular season.

Powell fell in both the boys’ and girls’ matches, losing 4-1 to the Trojans.

The lone victory for both teams came at No. 1 singles, as Naomi Whipple defeated Whitney Bradfield 6-1, 6-2, and Nathan Preator defeated Bode Strand 6-4, 6-3.

“It was a good day for kids at the one singles spot,” coach Joe Asay said. “It was a good matchup for Naomi, good to see her get out and play some good tennis … Another opportunity for Nathan at that one spot to play his style of tennis. Look for those opportunities to be aggressive and then those occasions to just be patient.”

At No. 2 singles, Bailee Allred fell to Olivia Wilson 6-3, 6-0, while Ryan Barrus fell 6-0, 6-2.

No. 1 doubles saw Kyra Morrow and Isabelle Urbach lose to Sarah Klosterman and Lauren Bradfield 6-1, 6-4, while Calvin Opps and Memphis Solberg lost to Landon Ramsey and Mitchell Reishus 6-3, 6-2.

Elaina Kousoulos and Emily Jensen fell to Mackenzie Nokes and Abby Hager 6-1, 6-2, and Kazdyn Lee and Isaac Dunsey lost to Talen Larsen and Noah Dresang 6-2, 6-1.

No. 3 doubles saw Noelle Leighton and Anna David fall to Emma Sherman and Kaidence Boyles 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and Jonathan Clark and Josh Waite lost to Mark Skaf and Gavin Larsen 6-3, 6-3.

The Panthers were supposed to take on Natrona County as well on Saturday, but a decision by the Mustangs and Fillies saw them head home before starting matches against Cody.

Asay said he and Cody coach Jason Quigley had spoken with the head coach for NC, who was not on the trip to Cody and Powell, and said they would find a way to determine any tiebreakers should they be needed for regional seeding with it being unlikely those matches would be made up due to a short week this week.

The Panthers now head into the postseason with the North Regional Tournament starting on Friday.

Powell and Cody will be hosting the tournament together, with No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles  playing in Cody, while No. 2 and No. 3 doubles will play in Powell.

Action starts at 8 a.m. in Cody on both Friday and Saturday while action in Powell starts at 8:30 a.m. both days.

“As we go through the short season, we kind of hope to build on the match experience. As they step out on the courts here for this regional tournament, I hope they’re able to take those things they’ve built on,” Asay said. “Even in those losses they’ve played well and been right there. Maybe we can flip the script on some of those matches as we see those opponents.”
