With the thermometer dipping below freezing, sugar beet growers are putting the final wrap on the harvest in Western Sugar Cooperative’s Lovell factory district.
Light snow was falling on Heart Mountain farm ground Tuesday morning as beet board member Ric Rodriguez reported.
“Lovell was 91% complete as of this morning. I should finish today,” he said.
Most of the beets left to be dug are in the Lovell and Emblem areas, with a few stragglers around Powell, he added.
Yield is estimated to be slightly under 30 tons per acre. Average sugar content of the crop is 19.15%.
