The first Powell victory of Homecoming week went to the Lady Panther swimmers Monday night with a win over Cody.Monique Zorgati and Anya Tracy each won two events and Maddy Jones and Belen Quillen each grabbed one as the Lady Panthers rolled to a 104-82 win.Monique Zorgati's wins came in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and Tracy won the individual medley and the backstroke. Jones took the shortest race, the 50 freestyle and Quillen the longest, the 500. Jones also recorded a second place in the backstroke and Quillen finished second in the individual medley.
The four also played roles in two relay wins. Tracy, Jones and Zorgati joined Korrie Kalberer and started the meet off right with a win in the medley relay. Jones and Zorgati swam the 400 freestyle relay with Quillen and Jessica Wurzel to end the meet on a winning note with another win.
Wurzel, Brittany Christensen, Alyssa Smith and Courtenay Zorgati all recorded second-place finishes during the meet. Wurzel's came in the 200 and she added a third in the 100. Smith finished second in the 500 and she earned third in the 50 as well. Courtenay Zorgati was second in the breaststroke and she also finished fourth in the 200. Christensen was second in the butterfly.
Korrie Kalberer placed in two events, finishing third in the breaststroke and fourth in the 50. Claire Wetzel was third in the backstroke, Lydia Allen finished fourth in the butterfly and Emily LaPlante was fourth in diving.
Rounding out the Powell scoring were a second place by the 200 relay team of Baxter Heinert, Tracy, Kalberer and Quillen, and third place finishes by relay B teams. Hannah Cordes, Sarah Wurzel, Smith and Wetzel were second in the medley relay while Christansen, Smith, Courtenay Zorgati and Sarah Wurzel were third in the 400 relay.
Seven swimmers cut time from their seed times going into the meet. Jones recorded a new state qualifying time in the 50, and Smith inched closer to a qualifying time in the event as well. Quillen and Smith both improved their times in the 500, and Courtenay Zorgati and Kalberer did the same in the breaststroke. Jessica Wurzel cut time in the 100, putting her on the edge of qualifying for state in the event.
