Stephen “Harvey” Gilbert of Powell died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012 in Powell. He was 92.
Harvey was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Hanks, N.D., to Sarah Harvey and Dwight R. Gilbert.
He attended Hanks schools and graduated from high school in 1938. He worked in Minnesota and was a railroad switchman in Minot, N.D.
He married Loretta Schaefer on Sept. 21, 1942. Harvey and Loretta farmed in North Dakota and moved to the Ralston Bench in 1952, where they lived for more than 30 years. The couple had three sons and four daughters.
In 1985, Harvey retired from farming and they moved to town.
Harvey enjoyed carving diamond willow canes, riding horses and moving cattle. He also was part of the rock club. He was a member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Loretta, who died Aug. 29, 2003; son Doyle Gilbert; parents, Sarah and Dwight; brothers Howard, Herbert and Alvin Gilbert; grandson Mitchel Lamb; and son-in-law Richard Peterson.
Harvey is survived by his sons Dwight (Dawn) Gilbert and Douglas Gilbert; daughters Diane Gilbert, DeLaine (Curt) Lamb, Dorene Gilbert (Gary Asay) and Deborah Karst; brothers Keith (Donna) Gilbert and Dean (Melba) Gilbert; sisters Catherine Gathman, Vera Holms, Genevieve Twete, Elaine Schaub and Muriel Miers; 16 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Jan. 28 at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Powell.
Burial followed in the Crown Hill Cemetery.
