The Wyoming Coaches’ Association has named Powell High School track coach Scott Smith one of its spring coaches of the year. Smith earned the award after directing the Panther boys to their third state title in Class 3A in the last five seasons.
The Panther girls also finished as the 2011 state runner-up in Class 3A.
In addition to Smith, other boys’ track coaches honored by the WCA this spring included Rosie Brown (Natrona County), Bob Cochran (Pine Bluffs) and Mike Bates (Snake River). Gillette’s Steve Oldenburg was honored as an assistant coach.
Northwest College head soccer coach Rob Hill was honored by the WCA for his work coaching the Cody boys to a Class 3A state title this past spring. Hill and Sheridan’s Kevin Rizer were the WCA honorees for boys’ soccer coaches of the year.
On the girls’ side, coach of the year honors in 2011 went to Carl Matson (Gillette) and Tom Ralston (Jackson) in soccer. Kevin Williams (Kelly Walsh), Scott Shaffer (Cody), Joe Koritnik (Lovell) and Briant Teichert (Cokeville) were honored for girls’ track.
Jackson girls’ soccer assistant coach Kristen Pizarro and Kelly Walsh girls’ track assistant John Ziegler were honored as well by the WCA for their work.
