Firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze that broke out Thursday afternoon near the Dead Indian Summit Overlook.
Started by a lightning strike, the Switchback Fire burned through only about a tenth of an acre before being put out that evening.
The Park County Sheriff’s Office reported that the U.S. Forest Service sent multiple engines and a helicopter to the scene. The site was northwest of the summit on a steep hillside, within the Shoshone National Forest.
According to the Cody Interagency Dispatch Center, it was the 10th fire known to have been triggered by lightning in the Shoshone this year and followed a similarly small fire on Wednesday.
Those 10 natural fires have burned roughly 5.5 acres, while four human-caused fires in the forest have burned roughly 23 acres.
