PHS hoops fall to Rocky Griz on Saturday

For the first time in the 2020-21 season, the Powell High School boys’ basketball couldn’t find a rhythm on Saturday in Cowley.

Early on against Rocky Mountain, the Panthers were unable to find success in the paint or from outside, putting them in a hole. They scored just eight points in the first half, trailing 25-8 at the break.

After the intermission, PHS finally found some offensive production, outscoring the Grizzlies 14-13 in the period. However, Rocky Mountain still held a sizable, 14-point lead with just eight minutes left.

In the last quarter of play, the Grizzlies expanded the margin, sealing a 55-30 win over the Panthers. The victory came just a few weeks after Powell upended Rocky Mountain 61-49 at home on Dec. 19.

Powell struggled to contain Rocky Mountain’s key players, as the Grizzlies shot at a 52% clip from the field in the win. The Grizzlies — who are the No. 1 ranked team in the 2A classification — also committed very few miscues, turning the ball over just eight times as a team.

Following the loss, PHS sits at 4-1 overall. The Panthers’ next game is Friday at home against Shoshoni, when they host the 2-3 Wranglers at 7 p.m.
