Six Powell residents submitted letters of interest for filling the recently vacated seat on the Powell City Council.
“I was tickled pink with what we got here,” said Powell Mayor Don Hillman, noting that he ran unopposed in the last election. “I’m glad people are taking interest in city government.”
Former Councilman Josh Shorb resigned from the council in November because he moved outside of Ward 3 and out of city limits. The council accepted letters of interest from prospective candidates to fill the vacancy up through Monday.
The six applicants are William Petersen, Janice Bailey, John Sides, Zachary Coombs, Lesli Spencer and Todd Voller.
Council members John Wetzel and Tim Sapp will meet with Hillman on Friday to narrow down the six applicants to two or three to be interviewed the week of Dec. 14, Hillman said. If all goes according to plan, the new council member should be appointed during the Dec. 21 City Council meeting and his or her first meeting on the board will be Jan. 4.
Whomever is selected will serve for the remainder of Shorb’s term and can run for re-election in November.
“This might be the most (applicants) we have ever had, that I can remember anyway,” Hillman said. “We got four guys and two gals — and that is cool. It has been a long time since we had a lady on the council.”
Some applicants’ letters listed their backgrounds, while others just said they felt they would be able to contribute to the council’s efforts to help the town and its residents.
Petersen is the former building inspector for the city. Sides is the chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission and previously served on the City Council and recreation board from 2004-06.
Bailey is a retired local business owner and volunteers with Powell Valley Longterm Healthcare, Hillman said. Coombs is a science teacher at Powell Middle School.
Spencer is the business manager at Keele Sanitation LLC.
Voller’s letter of interest just said he was interested, Hillman said. Voller ran for the Park County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees in 2012.
