(Nov. 21, 1950 - Feb. 12, 2012)
Shelden R. Carter died Sunday morning, Feb. 12, 2012 surrounded by his sons and their mother Shelly at his home in American Fork, Utah. He was 61.
He was a devoted father, grandfather, husband, and friend who loved everyone and was always looking out for others.
Shelden was born in Lovell on Nov. 21, 1950 to Norval Edwin Carter and Alice Roberts Carter. He grew up in Byron, and graduated from Byron High School in 1969. In high school, he excelled in athletics and academics. Shelden met Shelly Sessions in high school, and they married on June 10, 1970.
After attending Northwest Community College in Powell, he continued his education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, graduating with a degree in business management. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Wyoming in 1976. Shelden began his law practice at the Utah County Public Defender’s office in Provo. After a short while, he started his private practice. He tenaciously continued to work between chemotherapy treatments until December 2011, surprising everyone with his ability to successfully push on despite his personal battle.
Shelden’s family was his greatest joy. If he wasn’t at work, he was picking up grandchildren from school for a fun time, sitting on the sidelines at ballgames, school programs, or just playing with them and taking them wherever they wanted to go. Parks, swimming pools, toy shopping, pizza, ice cream — he was an easy touch and his sons and grandchildren knew they would get whatever they wanted from Grandpa. They put a ‘Super Grandpa’ sticker on his truck window advertising what they thought of him.
Shelden battled cancer for more than two years and was determined to get all he could out of life — especially more time with his family. He enjoyed joking and made people smile in his presence.
Shelden’s family, relatives and friends will remember his fun loving, adventurous spirit and his kindness to everyone.
He is survived by his ex-wife — who cared for him through his illness — Shelly Sessions Carter; three sons: Shawn of Salt Lake, Brandt (Karren) of Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Brannon (Kelle) of Pleasant Grove; and six grandchildren: Calvin, Kylee, Kelson, Kaleb, Korman, and Kambry.
Also surviving him are family members: Sharon Carter Dusenberry (Bill); Brent Carter (Glenna); Sue Carter Lewis (Joe); Dan Williamson (Colleen); Sheila Williamson Becker (Wayne) of Powell; and Don Williamson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Norval and Alice, brother Kent, and infant sister, Sherry Lee.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 18, in the LDS chapel in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
Cremation has taken place, and the burial was in the Provo Cemetery. Condolences to the family can be sent to www.warenski.com.
Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Association or Primary Children’s Hospital.
